There
must be innumerable examples
of British genius failing to gain the recognition it deserved. A bushel
of modesty can hide even the brightest of lights, and the brightest of lights
will always fade with the passage of years. For too many of these years
the Lanchester name has been largely forgotten. Rolls-Royce have guarded
jealously their reputation for making the best cars in the world, and few
people now are aware that Lanchesters were similarly described and for a
long time provided their stiffest competition.
Henry Ford may have shown the world the efficiency of mass production, but how many people realise that Frederick Lanchester devised the basis for this long before? The story of the three brothers whose creativity, intellects and passionate commitment to their ideals laid the foundations for the best engineering practice we have today, demands to be told.
